this tea bowl series was made on a warm day in the first week of august. i made it in the sunny workshop at my mountain studio, that was built in 1633 for two capuchin monks. now it is me who is working in the old rooms. when i left my home that morning and took the short way to my studio house it was still quiet and the light was beautiful. i realized by the scent in the morning air that summer will soon bid us farewell. this is a late summer bowl from 2023.

in the small garden of my studio house you will find my tea house. it is built entirely of wood, the floor has small stone slabs. i always sit there in the afternoon and drink a cup of tea, alone or with guests. it is always a special quiet moment that i cherish and often look forward to in the morning. the jar and tea cup i have thrown from stoneware, glazed with a metallic gold-black shimmering matte glaze. it beautifully captures the magic of the moment while drinking tea.

my teahouse was not always a teahouse. i like empty spaces, i can do whatever i want with them. so i created a teahouse out of the old little house next to my studio: it reminds me of my trips to japan. i drank tea in many places in japan, some of them are unforgettable. for example the tea time in my friend motomu oyama’s studio, it was very cold and we drank tea wrapped in wool blankets and talked about the exhibition we were planning together. also the tea time in one of the wooden buildings in the mountains, where i spontaneously got a warm tea from a woman – it was also cold and the end of november. also the bowl of matcha tea that a monk gave me in the suzuki museum. there are many more. i am actually in my tea house every day – alone or with guests. this tea set made of stoneware and glazed with tenmoku should also make for unforgettable times.

i made this bowl from white porcelain on a sunny day in early september in the warm lighted workshop at my mountain studio. when i was on the way to my studio house it was clear and the light was wonderful soft. i realized by the scent in the morning air that late summer will soon bid us farewell. this is a summer bowl from 2022 – and it will stay.

when i wake up in the morning, i see the sky, the forest, the mountains. and i hear nothing but the gentle murmur of the stream, sometimes a bird in the distance. most of my time, i am living in the mountains on the south side of Grisons. this silence of the valley probably influences my creation the most. this calmness and simplicity shape my vessels in the design. the colours of the surroundings, however, shape my choice of surfaces.
the glaze of this bowl captures this mood. the bowl changes its radiance with the changing light, the time of day, the season. and the silence always remains. the shape of the vessel remains, too.

‘black night’ is a very new work of my longtime and favourite series (started in 2002) ‘don’t protect me – i am fragile anyway’. it is one of the topics for these special works to be real treasures, very delicate – fragile……
the surface of this bowl captures this mood very well. the bowl is made from black porcelain with its matte unglazed surface and carefully sanded, enriched with the red thread in the foot. the bowl will change its black with the time of the day and night and its the light: the silence remains. the shape of the vessel remains, too.
